My Approach to Mediation

Mediation offers a client-centred means of addressing disputes, focussed on finding a cost effective and practical solution. I aim to ensure that mediation clients feel that they are heard and that their thoughts and concerns are received with empathy so that they are empowered to reach resolution. I seek to bring focus on the commercial needs and interests of the parties which often play a greater role than the legal issues in reaching a satisfactory outcome to disputes.

My Mediation Training & Experience

I qualified as a mediator in March 2012 after successfully completing the SLS / Law Society of Northern Ireland Mediation course. I keep my mediation skills current by ongoing continuous professional development on this subject.

I regularly use my skills as a mediator to help my clients find the most advantageous outcome to legal disputes, both through mediation and through negotiation. I have assisted clients in mediations in subjects including insolvency and debt recovery, family properties, corporate disputes and professional negligence.

As of mid 2018, in the three years previous I have acted as counsel in approximately 20 mediations in areas including professional negligence, commercial property, landlord and tenant, insolvency and debt recovery, education judicial review, partnership, family inheritance and construction disputes. The vast majority of these have led to a satisfactory resolution at mediation.

My Legal Background

I have been a barrister in active practice since 2007 specialising in commercial and chancery work, with a particular interest in insolvency.

My skills in understanding a client’s concerns, identifying legal issues, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a legal case, identifying the parties’ needs and interests, and creatively seeking to find a solution to a case, all contribute towards helping the parties to a mediation to reach an agreed outcome to their dispute.

My Other Interests

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy volunteering as a leader in Scouting, working with leaders and young people from a wide range of backgrounds.
