My Approach to Mediation

Time, cost and effectiveness are paramount issues that apply in the modern world and are the principles that underpin my approach to mediation.

I recognise that one size does not always fit all. My approach to mediation is to encourage the parties to consider and view the problem or issues that they have from a variety of different angles. I approach the mediation process as one which can resolve the issues between the parties no matter how big the gulf between them can seem. I fully recognise that successful mediations can take the form of different approaches from the commercial to the more conciliatory. The parties have attended a mediation to try to seek to resolve their disputes and I try to help them reach that solution. I firmly believe that the parties should be told what they need to hear as opposed to what they want hear.

My Mediation Training and Experience

I undertook the CORE Mediation training course in 2013 and awarded the Core Certificate of Competence in Mediation Skills which involved extensive training and assessment in mediation, mediation advocacy and mediation negotiation.

I undertake regular continuing professional development with courses and training offered by the Bar Council, QuEST and Core Solutions.

I have been involved in many mediations over the years ranging from commercial and company disputes, shareholder disputes, professional negligence and land disputes. Those cases have covered a wide variety of clients ranging from large multinational organisations to individual clients. My mediation experience has covered a broad range of cases and clients from what can be described as “hard core” commercial mediations to those mediations that have called for a more delicate and lighter touch.

My Legal Background

I was called to the Bar in 1996. I am dual qualified in the Republic of Ireland. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and was a Committee Member of the Northern Irish Chapter for a number of years.

My practice covers a wide range of areas particularly commercial, chancery and company disputes. I also have considerable experience in the field of personal injury claims.
