My Approach to Mediation

Mediation empowers the parties to a conflict to engage in a hands on, in control, opportunity to air their grievances in a down to earth, straight forward manner, have their points fully listened to and to seek to settle their dispute in a safe, confidential and cost effective process. The facilitative guidance of a mediator provides an assurance that all the issues that a party, with some or no experience of disputes, wishes to raise are raised whilst confidences are respected. The mediation process provides the parties with the ability to achieve a settlement they can be content with and with the practical benefits which are not available in an imposed court judgment.

My Mediation Training & Experience

I trained as a mediator at Queen’s University of Belfast in conjunction with the Institute of Professional Legal Studies from September – October 2016 and am now an accredited member of the Barrister Mediation & Arbitration Service.

As a practising barrister of over 30 years’ experience I have been involved in many mediations for clients in commercial, land, banking, financial services and probate and inheritance disputes. I have taken into those mediations my experience of practising in those areas of law and knowing how parties need to have space and time to have a full input to exploring what has brought them into conflict, often with business associates or family members, and how best to resolve their differences in what may be a challenging but nonetheless dignified compromise. I have brought those skills together with the valuable skills acquired in mediation training to my role as mediator. I have mediated in commercial, probate, land and boundary, and inheritance disputes.

My Legal Background

I have been a Barrister at the Northern Ireland Bar for over 30 years principally practising Civil Law. I have wide experience in Personal Injury Law and Commercial/Property Law. I have a particular interest in Chancery and Commercial cases and also in Professional Negligence and Defamation matters. I have acted in and advised in many Clinical Negligence claims, Planning Appeals, Licensing Disputes, Lands Tribunal Hearings and Land Disputes, Coroner’s Inquests, Banking Disputes, Payment Protection Insurance Claims, Building Disputes, Probate and Inheritance Disputes and Judicial Reviews.

My Other Interests

I am a keen golfer, swimmer, ex-water polo player, songwriter and musician and former winner of the Belfast Nashville songwriter competition.
