Areas of Mediation
My Approach to Mediation
I have a passion for people, a sharp legal mind and an ability to remain calm in emotionally charged situations making me an excellent choice for employment and discrimination disputes.
• People centred: I have a down to earth personality, can quickly build rapport with clients and have a proven track record of successfully negotiating with challenging personalities.
• Solutions driven: I am incredibly passionate about helping people to find the best possible solutions to their problems and will often go the extra mile to achieve this, ensuring that the mediation process is specifically tailored to the parties’ needs.
• International expertise: Having gained legal experience in Europe, the United States and beyond, I have experience of managing cultural differences around the negotiation table.
My Mediation Training & Experience
I have completed both the foundation and advanced mediation course with CPD Seminars in the Republic of Ireland. As a result, I am an accredited mediator with Mediation Forum Ireland.
I have also assisted QuEST with the delivery of mediation training in Northern Ireland.
My interest in conflict resolution began during my time at Harvard University. While at Harvard, I completed the international humanitarian response course. As part of this, I participated in a disaster simulation, where I successfully negotiated the release of my team leader following a kidnap situation.
Upon my return to Northern Ireland, I worked as a consultant for the Centre for Democracy and Peace Building. In this role, I used the skills which I had developed at Harvard, to design community programmes aimed at reducing attacks on ethnic minorities in Northern Ireland. I was also involved in re-establishing the Unite Against Hate campaign and facilitating the Towards a Better Future Conference.
While at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, I represented the Institute at the International Mediation Competition in Chicago and the International Negotiation Competition in Lucerne.
As a result of these experiences, I have a unique skillset which I can bring to any mediation or negotiation.
To date, I have advised on a wide range of employment law issues including:
• Unfair Dismissal
• Constructive Unfair Dismissal
• Discrimination (age, disability, race and sex)
• Discrimination by association
• Unlawful deduction of wages
• Recruitment and selection procedures
My Legal Background
I graduated top of my class from Queen’s University, Belfast with a 1st Class Honours degree in Law and Politics. During my law degree, I completed an internship with the Office of the Lord Chief Justice for Northern Ireland.
Following graduation from Queen’s, I was selected to participate in an Irish American Bar Association programme in Los Angeles. Subsequently, I was awarded a Kennedy scholarship to enable me to study at Harvard University. During my time there, I focused on international law, human rights and conflict resolution. Highlights of my time there include representing clients in the Refugee & Immigration Law Clinic, travelling to Jordan to assess the Syrian Refugee Crisis and managing a mock Presidential campaign.
Upon my return to Northern Ireland, I completed the Bar course at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies. I subsequently graduated as the top Bar trainee and was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in September 2016.
Since being called to the Bar, I have gained experience in employment representing both claimants and respondents before the Industrial Tribunal, judicial review and immigration. I have also advised on licensing matters and have successfully secured a number of Protection Orders.
I was also admitted to the New York Bar in July 2016.
My Other Interests
Alongside my career at the Bar, I teach Contract Law and Rights and Accountability at Queen’s University, Belfast.
In my spare time, I serve as an independent member on Mid & East Antrim Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).
